I am an artist who struggles with Painting. I work primarily in oil on canvas or linen, with a practice underpinned by drawing and photography. My work considers the place of voyeurism in contemporary society and how this plays an inherent part of our everyday life, with or without our conscious recognition.
Working with figurative subject matter, my work questions a voyeuristic approach to the contemporary portrait. The use of found resources, drawing, snapshot photography and discarded imagery inform my practice and help to decipher the preconceptions we hold about traditional uses of portraiture in contemporary art. Questioning the ethics of looking rouse me to push boundaries and explore alternative methods of observation. With the notion of observation and surveillance being such an intrinsic part of contemporary society, my work questions the ways in which we observe and are observed respectively.
By exploiting the impressionable nature of oil paint, the intention of my work is to force the viewer to contemplate the place of painting in contemporary society and the evidence of the artists hand in depicting what has been observed. The manipulation of paint has been a constant struggle of mine and is something I plan to resolve through experimentation and research.
